Windows
If
you've got a house, at some point, you're going to
have to replace your home windows. That's true
whether your house is new or not, of course, but if
your house is older, they may even need replacement
now. And if that's true, keep in mind that replacing
your home windows may cost you a little bit upfront
now, but it's going to save you in energy costs far
down the road.
First things first: What type(s) of windows should
you choose when replacing windows? And where are you
going to get them from?
A great place to look for replacement home windows
when you first start doing research is on the
Internet. That doesn't mean you have to buy online
by any means, but simply research your different
options and find out what you want to do (and what's
possible) as a way to start. Once you've decided on
the windows you think you want, check them out
online and see if you can comparison shop to get a
good ballpark figure for what you want. Depending on
your needs, you can find fiberglass or vinyl window
installments that are very energy efficient, too.

Getting your new home windows and custom window
replacement: should you hire the job out, or do it
yourself?
Are you a do-it-yourselfer and able to install home
windows? If you are, you may decide that you want to
replace your home windows yourself, but keep in mind
that there are some pitfalls with doing this. Number
one, if you do the job wrong, you're going to have
to hire a contractor to fix what you did wrong AND
put your new windows in, too. Therefore, doing the
job yourself may actually cost you far more down the
road than it would have to simply hire someone to do
it for you upfront and get the best home windows for
the job. So unless you are really, really handy and
have done this before, it's probably a good idea to
hire a licensed contractor to do this for you.
Be careful whom you hire
Now, there's a caveat here when it comes to hiring
someone to put your home windows in for you,
especially if they are vinyl home windows. Make sure
you check things out carefully and only hire true
professionals. If you don't, again, you're going to
be paying for shoddy work that'll probably just have
to be fixed later anyway, thus costing you more than
it should have. Besides that, there are a lot of
headaches that go along with having to put up with a
job dragging along for far longer than it should, so
that you are living in the middle of unfinished
windows construction instead of simply enjoying your
nice new windows.
Finally, you should know that if you hire a company
to begin installing home windows, they will likely
want to have you buy the windows through them,
instead of buying them from someone else and having
the company install them (fiberglass replacement
windows can have a steep learning curve when
installing). This is good for you as well as for
them, as long as the company is on the up and up.
First of all, if they get and put the windows in for
you, they'll give you a warranty that they can stand
behind; if you get windows from someplace else and
they do put them in, they may not be able to
warranty the windows. So if the company wants to
have you select the windows through them and have
them do the work besides, that's not necessarily a
bad thing. It will probably get you a good deal and
a job done right, too, as long as the company itself
is reputable.
