Window Repair

Most of the windows and screen doors in homes today are assembled in the same way. The screen material is placed over a window frame and then stretched tight and held into place by forcing rubber spline into a groove into the frame.

So to fix your screen, you simply remove the old screen and spline and then cover the window frame with new screen and new spline. This quick and inexpensive repair job can make your windows look good as new. Here is a step-by-step guide to easy window screen repair.

1. First of all, remove the screen frames from your windows and place them flat on the floor or your workspace. Next, you need to remove the old screen by pulling the spline out of the groove. To get it started, use a screwdriver and pry up the spline in one of the corners. When it is worked loose, grab the spline and pull it completely out of the groove and throw it away. When the spline is gone, you can lift off the old screen and dispose of it.

2. Now place a piece of new screen over the top of the frame. Cut the screen so it is about one inch wider and longer than the hole in the frame one all sides. Make sure the screen is lined up straight before you begin securing it to the frame.

3. Begin in a top corner of the frame and press the end of the spline into the groove and on top of the screen. Use the spline roller to force the spline into the groove. Roll it down the length of the side of the frame, pushing the spline and screen into the groove as you go. When you come to a corner, you can use a screwdriver to help force the spline into place so it makes the bend around the corner.

4. Continue around the corner and push spline and screen into the grove surrounding the entire frame.

5. When you return to the starting point, you can use the scissors and cut the spline so it overlaps where you started by about an inch. You will probably need to use the screwdriver to force it down into the groove. Trim the excess screen away with the scissors, and the job is done.
