Broken Window Glass Repair

A broken window almost never needs a new window. We replace the cracked or shattered glass and keep your frame. Double-pane windows get a new insulated glass unit manufactured to the exact size, and single-pane windows get new glass set and glazed in the existing sash.

What to do right away with a broken window

Keep people and pets away.

Close off the room or affected area.

Leave unstable glass alone.

Do not pull shards from the frame or press on cracked glass.

Avoid handling or taping damaged glazing.

Tape does not make it safe. Leave removal and any temporary securing to a professional.

Send a photo from a safe position

or call us to explain the damage.

We offer board-up and temporary securing, subject to availability. Contact us about the opening and replacement glass. For urgent after-hours securing, contact an emergency remediation company. We will assess the damage and provide a clear estimate for the next step.

Keep your window

Broken double-pane glass

Most homes in Northern Virginia have double-pane windows, also called insulated glass or thermopane. A crack in either pane breaks the seal between the panes, so the whole insulated glass unit (IGU) is replaced. One pane can't be swapped on its own.

We measure the unit, order new insulated glass manufactured to the exact size, and install it in your existing window. The frame, trim and paint stay. Grids are matched to your pattern and Low-E is matched to your other windows. Glass replacement costs far less than a new window.

If the glass isn't cracked but has gone foggy or cloudy, see fogged window glass replacement.

How it works

How broken glass replacement works

An existing portfolio comparison of broken bay-window glass before and after replacement
Broken bay-window glass, before and after. This existing project comparison shows the damaged glass and the replacement in the same bay window.
  1. We measure.

Our technician measures the glass, checks the frame and sash, and notes grids, coatings and whether tempered glass is required.
  2. Your glass is manufactured to the exact size.

New insulated or single-pane glass is ordered for your opening.
  3. We install it.

We remove the broken glass safely and install the new glass in your existing window.
  4. We clean up.

We clean the glass and the work area and take the broken glass with us.

Most ordered materials typically arrive 10–12 business days after approval. Once they arrive, our office contacts you to schedule installation. This is the materials lead time, not a promise that installation will be completed within that period.

Repair or replace

Replace the glass or the whole window?

Replace the glass when the frame and sash are sound.

That's most broken windows, and it costs far less than a new window.

Look at a new window when the frame is rotted or warped, the window no longer opens or locks, or most of the windows in the house are failing.

Compare both in our repair vs. replacement guide.

Single-pane glass repair: older wood windows and storm windows

We reglaze single-pane wood windows and replace glass in wood and aluminum storm windows. The old glazing and damaged glass are removed, new glass is fitted, and the wood sash is reglazed. If the sash also has rot, we assess wood window sash repair at the same time. We confirm the work location and schedule for your project.

Your options

Tempered glass where code requires it

The replacement glazing is specified for the opening and applicable safety requirements. Some door, bathroom, low-level and stair locations require safety glazing; the exact dimensions and location matter. We assess the opening and use tempered glass where required.

Tempered glass is designed to break into small fragments rather than the long shards typical of ordinary glass. Broken tempered glass can still cause injury, so keep clear and leave removal to the technician.

Your options

Acoustic glass for compatible windows

For windows facing traffic, flight paths or other urban noise, we assess acoustic glass in a compatible existing window. Where the original window cannot be changed or accept that glass, an interior secondary sound-reduction window can be another option if there is room for it. This can be useful in condos with restrictions on exterior windows. The existing assembly and available space determine the approach; we do not promise a specific sound reduction or approval from a condo association.

See glass options for the differences between acoustic, laminated and other glazing.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Can you reglaze old wood windows and storm windows?

Yes. We reglaze single-pane wood windows and replace glass in wood and aluminum storm-window frames. The sash and frame condition determine any additional repair work.

Can I use your estimate for an insurance claim?

Yes. You can send our itemized estimate to your insurer. You handle the claim directly; AS&G does not deal with insurance companies on your behalf. Your insurer determines any coverage.

How long does ordered replacement glass take?

Most ordered materials typically arrive 10–12 business days after approval. Once they arrive, our office contacts you to schedule installation. This is the materials lead time, not a promise that installation will be completed within that period.

What warranty applies to insulated glass replacement?

Insulated glass has a 10-year warranty, and labor/workmanship has a one-year warranty. Other product warranties vary; screens have no warranty. Refer to AS&G's written warranty for the coverage and terms for your project.

Can you replace just the glass in my window?

Yes. We replace the broken glass and keep your frame, trim and paint. Double-pane windows get a new insulated glass unit, and single-pane windows get a new pane glazed into the existing sash.

Can a cracked double-pane window be repaired?

The whole insulated glass unit is replaced. A crack in either pane breaks the seal between the panes, so one pane can't be swapped on its own. The new unit goes into your existing window.

Is it cheaper to replace the glass or the whole window?

Replacing the glass costs far less. You pay for the new glass and the labor to install it, not a new frame, trim and paint. A new window only makes sense when the frame itself is damaged.

How much does it cost to replace broken window glass?

The price comes down to the size of the glass, single-pane or double-pane, grids, whether the code requires tempered glass there, and access to the window. Every estimate we write is itemized. Send a photo for a free estimate.

What should I do with broken window glass?

Keep people and pets away, leave shards in the frame and avoid touching or taping unstable glass. Take a photo only from a safe position and contact us. Residential temporary securing is available subject to scheduling; it is not a 24/7 service.

Do I need tempered glass?

The answer depends on the opening and applicable safety-glazing requirements. We check the location, dimensions and use before specifying the replacement. Tempered glass is used where required.

Why did my window crack on its own?

Glass can crack after impact from a stone, branch, ball or animal. Without a visible impact, uneven heating, an existing edge defect or stress from movement in the surrounding frame can contribute. We inspect the glass and opening rather than assume every crack has the same cause.
